Very widespread in India, where it grows mainly in the Himalayan region up to 2000 m altitude , its Sanskrit name is Punarnava, which literally means " which regenerates and rejuvenates the body ". This plant has many traditional and medicinal uses , but it is also used for these cosmetic properties. Very rich in antioxidants , this plant would have an anti-stress and protective effect against aging . The main active compounds in the root of Boerhavia diffusa are Boeravinones , compounds of the rotenoids family which are known to have potent antioxidant and genoprotective activity . The computer-assisted modeling show that Boeravinone B is an agonist of PPAR gamma receptors, natural regulator of melanin synthesis in melanocytes.
