Beyond Good and Evil established Nietzsche's position as the leading European philosopher of his time. This work dramatically rejects the tradition of Western thought with its ideas about truth and God, good and evil. Nietzsche pointed out that the Christian world was filled with false piety and infected with 'slave morality'. With intelligence and energy, he moved from this criticism to a philosophy that celebrated the present and demanded that individuals impose their 'will to power' on the world.

 

This edition includes a commentary on the text by translator and foreword Michael Tanner, who explains some of the more abstract passages in Beyond Good and Evil.

 

Frederich Nietzsche (1844-1900) became chair of classical philology at the University of Basel at the age of 24 until poor health forced him to retire in 1879. He separated himself from society until his final collapse in 1899 when he went mad. A highly original thinker, Nietzsche's influence on subsequent writers, such as George Bernard Shaw, D.H. Lawrence, Thomas Mann and Jean-Paul Sartre, were huge.
